Word for the Wise August 11, 2006 Broadcast Topic: Female cuckold

We ended a program on cuckold by inviting theories on why our English lexicon contains a term for a husband whose wife cheats on him but does not contain a comparable term for a wife whose husband cheats on her. Our ever-faithful listeners weighed in with hypotheses but came up with only one term. (来源:英语学习门户网站EnglishCN.com)

That term was player, a slangy word which certainly has some currency. Another correspondent suggested cuckold has no true feminine counterpart for the same reason diva has no true masculine counterpart. We're not going near that one. But by far, the majority of responses to our query included such explanations as "blame it on misogyny," "because it's a man's world," and "sexism."

And plenty of folks were inspired to ask about a complementary (if not complimentary) term for misogyny. That's easy: a misogynist hates women; a misandrist—the "andr" combining form means "man"—hates men. And, just for the record, a misanthrope (anthropos meaning "human being") hates or distrusts humankind.

Finally, one fellow sent along another question worth putting out there. He said he's been looking for years for the female version of curmudgeon. Curmudgeon is "a crusty, ill-tempered, and usually old man." So what do we call a female curmudgeon?

Send your thoughts our way.
