Word for the Wise June 04, 2007 Broadcast Topic: King George III

The baby who would grow up to lose the American colonies was born on this date in 1738. He was the first monarch from the House of Hanover to be born in Britain and to call English his mother tongue; beloved by many of his British subjects, he was loathed by the Irish and damned as a tyrant by rebellious Americans. After decades of episodic odd behavior, King George III was locked away for the last nine years of his life, adjudged non compos mentis, literally, "not having mastery of one's mind" in Latin, and, in English, used to describe a person considered to lack the mental capacity to understand the nature, consequences, and effect of a situation or transaction. The King's disability led to advisors and his son, the Prince Regent, assuming control of the government. It also led to the second decade of the 19th century's being dubbed the Regency period.

And yes, that same era is behind the term Regency romance, a subgenre of romance novels set in that same time period and featuring plenty of fast-paced, witty dialogue, multiple romances, and plenty of social activity.
